How can I stop or limit my 18 month old's climbing?

I think its great that he climbs and shows such great balance, grip and obstacle negotiation skills, but some of the things he climbs on are dangerous for a kid his age.

For example, we have a 1/2 wall behind our couch leading to the kitchen- he's on top of the couch hanging onto the wall- luckily not climbing over yet. But he lets go and falls back onto the seat of the couch- and laughs. But if he pushes off a bit he will land on the floor. Its not like we can move our couch out of the house.

I don't want to discourage his curiosity and learning, but would love to have more control over what he can climb.
