How can I brush my 14 mth old's teeth?

How do I brush my son's teeth? He is 14 months old. He likes the toothbrush and puts it in his mouth and chews on it- but there is no real brushing with him as hard as I try.

What can I do to help this along? Any special techniques?

I would also love to hear any suggestions on this topic. And, when do you begin using toothpaste?

When it comes to brushing little ones teeth the whole biting and chewing on the brush may be as far as you get for a little while. One suggestion is to have mommy or daddy brushing their teeth while the other parent brushes the child's. Have the adult who is brushing their teeth model how you want the child to open their mouth and how the tooth brush is used to clean the teeth. Little ones are always wanting to copy grown ups and may be more motivated to cooperate. Be patient and give it time. Your little one may not get the whole concept of that cool little brush being for cleaning his teeth for a couple months. As for toothpaste, there is both baby and toddler toothpaste that is non-toxic and safe for the child to swallow. Regular toothpaste should not be used until a child is old enough to know how to spit it out. The fluoride in regular toothpaste is toxic and should not be given to a child who will swallow it.
